The VIC6 programme is entering its 4th phase with the focus now on the Auto Manufacturing Sector. The Auto Manufacturing Sector activities are based on the established work program for the other VIC6 sectors already under way. These activities include:

  1. Public industry information sessions (e.g., this meeting)
  2. Organising working group meetings
  3. Planning physical demonstrations
  4. Writing business analysis
  5. Sector Activity as per VIC6 Activity Plan
  6. Ongoing operations
  7. Reporting

IPv6 is fundamental to the ongoing deployment of Intelligent Transport Systems.
Some initiatives currently under way includes the offer of VIC6 testbed facilities to the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) Industry Panel as part of their work on IPv6 based vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications.

This work is based on VIC6 automotive members supporting the ISO's Communications, Airinterface, Long and Medium range (CALM) wireless communication protocols and air interfaces. CALM spans multiple modes of communications and multiple methods of transmissions in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The CALM architecture is based on a IPv6 convergence layer that decouples applications from the communication infrastructure.

The aim of this meeting is primarily to explore the range of IPv6 services that VIC6 can offer the Auto Manufacturing industry. These are key to their pursuit of next generation enhancements to ITS products, applications and services. This will tap new markets and new consumers for ongoing growth.

Come along and learn how IPv6 and VIC6 can help you embrace new opportunities and improve current practices.

Phase 4: Automotive Sector and VIC6

The aim of VIC6 Phase 4 is to build one or more demonstrations of IPv6 capability to support applications for the automotive manufacturing sector. Arising from these demonstrations, sector organisations would then be in a good position to gain understanding and experience to allow smooth transition to IPv6, which will ultimately stimulate sector innovation based upon IPv6.

Development of Phase 4

1. Business Analysis: discussions with the Victorian automotive sector on the business parameters, issues and timelines to IPv6 adoption.
2. IPv6 Demonstration Design: based upon the Business Analysis, designing relevant demonstrations of automotive sector applications and VIC6 network interoperability.
3. IPv6 Demonstration Implementation: setting up the designed network, organising testing and carrying out demonstrations.
4. Project Review: Based upon the above, providing a written analysis on the results, the issues arising, and the potential benefits of IPv6 to the automotive sector.

Phase 4 Commencement

Phase 4 is due to commence in October 2009. If you are interested in being involved in discussion about the automotive services sector demonstrations, or if you wish to be kept informed about the progress of the project, please see this form: Involvement with the VIC6 TestNet.
